You must become one with the song. You cannot let anything distract you, not the audience, not other members of the ensemble, not anything. Know your part, play your part, integrate your part so tightly into the piece so that there are no seams. The part you play in the ensemble is crucial; without bass the song has no platform, no bottom, no root. When the bass is integrated, the song sounds right, perfect, whole. When the bass is not integrated the song sounds wrong, imperfect, and incomplete.
